How uniform is your greenhouse climate?

Climate uniformity and air movement inside the greenhouse are receiving increasing attention within our industry. Achieving an uniform climate is not only a technical objective, but is also closely linked to crop performance and fruit quality.

Last week, I visited Mike Zuidgeest location together with Peter Van Weel, Hein Jasperse and Rob van Hulzen to carry out a smoke test as part of a project led by Peter Van Weel. The goal is to optimise cucumber fruit quality by gaining better insight into greenhouse airflows, temperature distribution and crop transpiration rates.

During the test, we examined the interaction between screen gaps, air mixing, ventilation, above-screen temperature and LED-lighting strategies.

I represented Sigrow as a collaboration partner in this project, alongside Priva Horticulture and Van der Ende Group. Sigrow’s contribution is providing advanced climate measurements using the Sigrow sensor systems.

Gaining a better understanding of the greenhouse climate is an important step towards increased energy efficiency and improved quality outcomes.
